President Donald Trump has spent months bragging that he could replace Jerome Powell when the Federal Reserve chair’s term expires in May. But after offering his strongest indication yet that he has chosen a successor, the markets pushed back with a clear message: not so fast.

Following months of rumors about a long list of possible candidates, Trump announced last week that he already knows whom he intends to nominate for the most influential role in the U.S. economy. Then, just a few days later during a Cabinet meeting, he pointed to National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett as “a potential Fed chair,” jokingly adding, “Are we allowed to say that?”
